Established in 1990, the Computer Center in Da-Yeh University primarily focuses on providing a good computing environment, building solid networking infrastructure, developing administrative applications, and promoting informational educations for the university personnel.
After completing the first and second generations of the campus network, the Center upgrades the system into the third generation, in which the backbone bandwidth raised to 1000MB(or 1GB), and all buildings, including the four colleges, the library, the administrative building, and the dormitory areas, are connected to the Computer Center in a ¡§star¡¨ topology. To provide better connection quality, in addition to the 1000MB-bandwidth connection to the regional TANet networking center, the Center also provide 8 lines of ADSL connections to a commercial ISP, HiNet.
In order to reduce the administrative workload, the Center started developing applications for all administrative offices when it was first established. Since 1996, the software system has been migrated from the first generation to the second generation that employs a distributive computing model to handle the dramatically increasing volume of data. Up to the year of 2002, there are six major software systems with thirty-three sub-systems for the Accounting, Academic affairs, Student affairs, Human resources, and Computer Center departments. The administrative application system is growing into the third generation, which employs the newest n-tier software architecture, to provide users more efficient software systems.
The Computer Center also has built up a wireless network system over the campus to provide a convenient environment for the students and faculties to connect to the network. Currently, the Center is aiming on renewing the network system in the dormitory areas, upgrading the servers for teaching, and providing a web-based mail system.
In the near future, the Center plans to improve the quality of the signals in the wireless network system so that students and faculties everywhere in the school can easily enjoy all the services provided by the Computer Center. The Center is designing a portal for all the services and we expect it to be completed in very near future. Designing a multimedia network for teaching and training is also a major plan for the Computer Center.
